EDRM
EDRM stands for Electronic Discovery Reference Model, a published workflow framework that describes the standard stages of an e-discovery engagement from information governance through final production.
The EDRM was developed in 2005 by a consortium of practitioners and vendors to give the e-discovery industry a common vocabulary. The model is now the default reference for describing e-discovery workflow.
The stages, in order, are: Information Governance, Identification, Preservation, Collection, Processing, Review, Analysis, Production, and Presentation. Each stage has its own tools, deliverables, and quality-control points. In practice, real-world engagements move iteratively between stages rather than purely sequentially.
For Canadian e-discovery, the EDRM provides a vocabulary; the Sedona Canada Principles provide the substantive guidance on proportionality, default formats, and cooperation.
